MyInvois e-POS is a genuinely free point-of-sale system from LHDN (HASiL) for Malaysian businesses with annual sales of up to RM5 million, and for a small, single-counter food business with a simple menu it may be all you need. It stops where most busy restaurants and cafés start. LHDN's own FAQ says e-POS has no integration with card, online banking or other payment gateways, that HASiL does not provide on-site support, and that you must move to a commercial POS once your sales pass RM5 million. The FAQ also doesn't mention table service, QR self-ordering, kitchen screens, menu add-ons or delivery-app integration. If your outlet runs on those, a full F&B POS like Popcorn POS earns its fee. This guide puts the two side by side and bases every e-POS point on LHDN's published FAQ, so you can check it yourself.
A note on sources: everything we say about MyInvois e-POS comes from LHDN's official Soalan Lazim MyInvois e-POS (issued 9 January 2026), LHDN's MyInvois e-POS page and LHDN-sponsored articles published in 2026. Where the FAQ is silent, we say "not mentioned in LHDN's FAQ" rather than guessing. e-POS may do more than the FAQ describes, so confirm anything important with HASiL directly.
Quick answers to the questions F&B owners ask
Is MyInvois e-POS really free?
Yes. LHDN provides it free of charge to eligible businesses. It does not cover your own equipment and internet: you supply the computer, tablet or phone, the internet line, and any optional receipt printer or barcode scanner.
Can a restaurant or café use it?
Yes, if you qualify. LHDN lists food and beverage among the suitable business types, alongside retail, clothing, beauty products, electrical goods and vehicle repair. To qualify, the owner or director must be a Malaysian citizen, the business must operate in Malaysia, and annual sales must be RM5 million or below.
Does it work without internet?
Yes, and this is a point in its favour. According to the FAQ, you can keep recording sales offline as long as you log in and activate the POS counter before the connection drops. Transactions sync automatically when you're back online. Popcorn POS also keeps working without internet and syncs when the connection returns, so offline mode doesn't separate the two.
Do I still need e-Invoice at all?
Possibly not. The government raised the e-Invoice threshold to RM3 million in annual sales from 1 September 2026. That matters here, because e-Invoice is e-POS's headline feature. If you're under RM3 million, the better question is which system helps you run service, not which one sends invoices to LHDN. There's more on this further down.
What MyInvois e-POS is, and who can use it
MyInvois e-POS is LHDN's own POS platform for micro, small and medium enterprises. It is designed to handle day-to-day selling and e-Invoice compliance in one place. Based on the FAQ and LHDN's published materials, it covers:
- Sales recording, with receipts or e-Invoices printed or sent by email
- Inventory management and basic financial records
- Sales reports you can download for any period: daily, weekly, monthly or yearly
- e-Invoices issued during the sale or when the buyer asks for one later. LHDN's published articles say a consolidated e-Invoice is generated automatically when no one asks
- Taxpayer QR scanning, which reads a buyer's Taxpayer QR code from the MyInvois Portal to fill in details such as their TIN
- Staff roles and an audit log: the owner can assign roles such as Supervisor, POS Cashier, Accountant and Auditor, and user activity is recorded
- Offline selling that syncs when the connection returns
There's no daily transaction limit. It runs on a computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone with an up-to-date operating system and browser.
How you sign up
Registration is done in person. You apply at the service counter of a main HASiL office near you (not a satellite office or UTC branch). Bring the owner or business name, MyKad number, tax identification number (TIN), email address and, if you have one, a copy of your business registration certificate. HASiL explains the features, and access is approved within three working days of receiving complete documents. One email address can only be used to register one business.
Who can't use it
You can't use it if your owner or director isn't a Malaysian citizen or your annual sales are above RM5 million. Tax agents, service providers and intermediaries are also excluded, because e-POS is meant for businesses selling directly to customers at their premises. Two practical points also come from the FAQ. First, the Client ID and Client Secret that link e-POS to MyInvois expire and must be renewed. Until you renew them, you can still record sales, but e-Invoices are not sent to LHDN. Second, if you also use the MyInvois Portal, you must make sure the same sale isn't submitted twice.

e-POS details are from LHDN's FAQ issued 9 January 2026 and LHDN's published materials. Popcorn POS details are from popcorntek.com.my as at October 2026. "Not mentioned in LHDN's FAQ" means just that: the feature may exist, so ask HASiL if it matters to you.
When MyInvois e-POS is enough
To be fair to e-POS, free is the right answer for some businesses. It is likely to be enough if most of these describe you:
- You run one counter, and customers order and pay at that counter
- Your menu is short, without many add-ons, sizes or set combinations
- You're comfortable keying in how each customer paid, and checking it against your card terminal or QR settlement at closing
- You don't take delivery-app orders, or only a handful you can enter by hand
- You can sort out most problems yourself, and office-hours help is enough
- The owner or director is a Malaysian citizen and your sales are comfortably under RM5 million
A drinks kiosk, a kuih stall or a small takeaway counter with a fixed menu could fit this profile well. If that's you, e-POS is worth a serious look before you pay for anything.
Where a busy F&B outlet outgrows it
Payments aren't linked to the POS
LHDN's FAQ says e-POS has no integration with card, online banking or other payment gateways, so staff record which method the customer used. At a quiet counter that's fine. At lunch peak it means a separate card terminal or QR standee, a cashier entering the amount twice, and a check at closing to make sure the terminal settlement matches what was recorded. Popcorn POS takes cash, card, e-wallet and split payments, and its Advance and Ultimate plans connect card and e-wallet payments to the POS through the FIUU payment gateway.
Table service and the kitchen
The FAQ describes selling, stock and reports. It doesn't mention tables, waiter ordering, QR self-ordering or sending orders to the kitchen. A dine-in restaurant depends on exactly those: the order is taken at the table, the ticket reaches the kitchen, and the bill is split at the end. Popcorn POS has a Waiter App for table-side ordering, a QR e-menu with per-table QR codes, kitchen and bar printer routing and a Kitchen Display, plus split bills and merged tables.
Menus built from options
Kopi kurang manis, bubble tea with extra pearls, nasi lemak with an ayam goreng add-on, a lunch set with a drink: F&B menus are built from options. LHDN's FAQ doesn't mention modifiers, add-ons or combo items. Popcorn POS supports modifier groups and combo items, so the order that reaches the kitchen matches what the customer actually asked for.
Delivery orders
If GrabFood or Foodpanda make up a real share of your sales, typing each order into a second system is slow and easy to get wrong. The FAQ doesn't mention delivery-platform integration. Popcorn POS integrates GrabFood and Foodpanda on its Advance plan (as your one chosen integration) and on Ultimate.
Help when something goes wrong on a Saturday night
e-POS support is a helpdesk (03-8680 3767, EPOS option) from Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm, plus live chat and a feedback form. HASiL does not visit business premises, though you can get help at a main HASiL office and attend free briefing sessions. That's reasonable for a business that keeps office hours. Restaurants, though, are busiest when offices are closed. Popcorn POS offers 24/7 support and training for your team, and its technical consultants respond within one working day.
Growing past one outlet, or past RM5 million
The FAQ doesn't mention running several outlets on one account, and one email address can only register one business. Once annual sales go above RM5 million, you're no longer eligible. HASiL will contact you and give you time, but you must move to a commercial POS at your own cost. If you plan to grow, expect that switch to come eventually. Setting up your menu, stock list and staff once is easier than doing it twice.
Free vs paid: working out the real cost
The difference in software price is real, but smaller than it looks:
- MyInvois e-POS: RM0 for the software. You pay for the device, internet and any printer or scanner.
- Popcorn POS Lite: RM350 a year, which is under RM1 a day, or RM35 for a single month. It covers the cashier POS, real-time reporting, e-Invoice, SST, multi-payment support, multi-outlet management, an accounting system link and mall integration.
- Popcorn POS Basic: RM1,080 a year (RM90 a month, billed annually). It adds the QR e-menu, inventory management and attendance tracking.
- Advance (RM1,230 a year) and Ultimate (RM1,380 a year): these add the FIUU payment gateway, GrabFood and Foodpanda integration, or in-app membership. Advance includes one of the three; Ultimate includes all three.
- Add-ons: an extra cashier is RM300 a year, the Waiter App RM120 a year and the Kitchen Display RM120 a year.
You need hardware either way, at minimum a device and usually a receipt printer, so it doesn't change the comparison much. The costs that don't appear on any price list are time costs: a cashier entering payments twice, delivery orders re-typed from a tablet, a trip to the HASiL office to register, and a migration later if you outgrow e-POS. If those add up to more than a ringgit or two a day at your outlet, the paid system pays for itself. For a full breakdown, see our guide to how much a POS system costs in Malaysia.
Where e-Invoice fits after the RM3 million change
Much of the early interest in e-POS came from the e-Invoice rollout. That changed on 30 August 2026, when the government raised the e-Invoice threshold from RM1 million to RM3 million in annual sales, effective 1 September. LHDN says more than 1.1 million businesses are now exempt, and it still encourages voluntary participation.
For many single-outlet cafés and stalls, e-Invoice is therefore no longer the deciding factor. Three situations to think about:
- Annual sales below RM3 million: you are generally not required to implement e-Invoice. LHDN's guideline can still bring some smaller businesses into scope through a holding, shareholder or related company above the threshold, so check whether that applies to you. Otherwise, choose your POS on how you run service.
- Between RM3 million and RM5 million: e-Invoice applies. Both e-POS and Popcorn POS handle it, so again the choice comes down to operations.
- Above RM5 million: e-POS isn't available, and you'll need a commercial POS.
Our LHDN e-Invoice guide for F&B covers the rules in more detail.
A simple way to decide
- Choose MyInvois e-POS if you run a single counter with a simple menu, take payment at the counter, don't rely on delivery apps, can manage with office-hours support, and qualify (Malaysian-citizen owner or director, sales up to RM5 million).
- Choose Popcorn POS if you take orders at tables or by QR, send orders to a kitchen, sell items with add-ons or sets, take GrabFood or Foodpanda orders, want card and e-wallet payments connected to the POS, run or plan more than one outlet, or need help outside office hours.
- Not sure yet? Popcorn POS Lite is RM35 for a single month, so you can run a full F&B POS through a busy period and compare before committing to a year.
Neither system is better for everyone. A free system that fits your counter is a good deal; one that slows down your lunch rush is not.
Questions to ask before you choose any POS
- How do card and e-wallet payments reach the POS: connected, or keyed in by hand?
- How does a table or QR order get to the kitchen?
- Can I set up add-ons, sizes and set meals the way my menu actually works?
- Do GrabFood and Foodpanda orders come in automatically?
- What happens if the internet drops in the middle of service?
- Who do I call at 8pm on a Saturday, and will anyone come to the shop?
- What happens when I open a second outlet, or my sales pass RM3 million or RM5 million?
- Can I take my menu, stock list and sales history with me if I switch later? LHDN's FAQ mentions downloadable sales reports; ask HASiL about anything else before you build a large menu in e-POS.
